2012 Annual Conference/General Meeting at Oshogbo:
The 2012 Annual Conference/General Meeting was held in Osogbo from 4th-6th July, 2012 with the theme Strategies for Enhancing and Sustaining Positive Values for National Development. At the Conference, I was elected President/Chairman in Council. This newsletter is a way of connecting with members of the Institute. It will be issued from the office of the President every quarter. In this first issue, I will share with you my agenda for taking the institute to the next level and the actions that we have taken in the first three months.
Strategic Direction/Agenda for ISMN:
Immediately after the election in Oshogbo, I formulated a strategic direction/agenda for the institute based on my election promises and the challenges facing the institute. The strategic direction/agenda was approved by the Executive Council of the Institute on 12th July, 2012 at a meeting in Lagos. Among other things, the strategic direction/agenda include formulation of strategic plan, reinvigoration of the secretariat for performance, promotion of professionalism, expansion, networking and impact and corporate philosophy for the new leadership.
Formulation of Strategic plan: As Strategists, we cannot be operating without strategic plan. The process of formulating the strategic plan will be used to train members on how to make strategic plan for organizations. The Vision 20:2020 requires that every ministry, department and agency of the federal government and other tiers of government (States and local government) should prepare strategic plans. There is a great opportunity for consulting in strategic plan formulation for members of the Institute. The committee to led the formulation of strategic plan for the Institute is led by the first Vice- President, Mr. Gbenga Oluniyi.
Re-invigoration of the Secretariat for Performance: It is clear to us as Strategists that leaders can design wonderful strategies but the success of organizations resides in the execution of those strategies. The execution capacity of the Secretariat of ISMN is being enhanced. An organogram has been approved for the Secretariat with clear job description and performance objectives is being finalized for all staff. Mechanism and system has been put in place for effective operation of the secretariat. A weekly staff meeting and management meeting has been Instituted and the minutes of meeting sent to the President. Clear policies are being formulated by the Treasurer, Mr. Charles Omenka to guide financial transactions. An annual workplan has been prepared.
An Ad hoc committee on staffing has been set up with Prof Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John as chairperson to carry out a staff audit and make appropriate recommendations. In addition, an annual workplan has been prepared.
We have also established regional offices at Abuja and PortHarcourt. The Chapter chairmen of Abuja and Rivers have agreed to host the regional offices. A liaison Officer, Ms. Dorathy Onugwu has been appointed as Abuja Liaison Officer.
Pursuit of Charter Status: A task force has been set up to pursue charter status. The task force is made up of the founding President (Dr. Austin Uwandulu), the immediate past president (Maj. Gen. Leo Ajiborisha), the registrar (Mr. Yemi Mapaderun), the national secretary (Pastor Itia Otabor), the president (Dr. Otive Igbuzor), 2nd Vice President (Mrs. Yetunde Oladipupo), Group Captain Uche Nwagwu and Hon. Tambuwal.
Upgrade of ISMN Journal: It has been resolved that the ISMN journal should be upgraded to international standard. A editorial board has been established with Dr. Ade Oyedijo as the chairman and Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John; Dr. Austin Uwandulu and Mr. Kenny Adenugba as members.
Reconstitution of the Synergy Group: The synergy group has been reconstituted with Pastor Ben Ewuzie Chairman.
Reconstitution of Committees: Various standing committees of the Institute have been reconstituted. They include membership committee with Mrs. Yetunde Oladipupo as Chairperson; Project Development Committee with Mr. Segun Sogbesan as Chairman; Promotions and Publication Committee with Mrs. Foluso Adedavoh as Chairperson; Audit committee with Alh Muktar Mohammed as Chairman, Ethics Committee with Cmdr Charles Ifebuzo as Chairman; Finance Committee with Mr. Charles Omenka as Chairman; Training Committee with Pastor Itia Otabor as Chairman and Education Committee with Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro-John as Chairman.
Corporate Membership: A draft concept paper on corporate membership has been prepared by the immediate Past President, Maj. Gen. Leo Ajiborisha. It will be deliberated upon at the next Council meeting.
Strategic Partnership with Institutions: Efforts are being made to partner with several institutions in the country and across the world. A comprehensive methodology of engaging partnerships and collaboration is being worked out.
Engagement with Government: Engagement process with government is being pursued. Introductory letters has been sent to the Presidency, national assembly, and the governor's forum. Plans are being concretised for holistic anti-corruption campaign, national value re-orientation and political strategy.
Reconciliation: The president has led a process of reconciliation with members who took the Institute to court. There is now an agreement to withdraw the case from court and the members have been re-absorbed into the Institute.
Involvement of Advisory Board members: Efforts are being stepped up to involve advisory board members in the activities of the Institute.
Editorial Guidelines: The Institute Electoral Committee has been tasked to codify the process and procedures as the Institutes' Electoral Guidelines for future use and members buy-in.
